Google Meta Description Checker & SERP Preview Tool
Preview your Google title and meta description before publishing. Check character count, estimated pixel width and possible truncation across desktop and mobile results.
Preview your Google result
See exactly how your title and description will look in search — before you publish. Google cuts off text by pixel width, not character count, so this checks the real thing.

Get My Free SEO AuditHow to Use the Google Meta Description Checker
This Google meta description checker helps you estimate whether a page title or description may be shortened in search results. Google does not apply one fixed character limit. The space used by each letter also affects how much text can appear.
Enter the page details
Add the display URL, title tag and meta description you plan to publish. The preview updates automatically as you type.
Check estimated width
Review both the character count and estimated pixel width. A short title containing wide letters can use more space than a longer title with narrow letters.
Compare both devices
Switch between desktop and mobile previews, then revise important wording if the tool indicates that the snippet may be truncated.
Meta Description Checker FAQs
Use these answers when reviewing titles and descriptions before publishing or updating an important page.
What is a good meta description length?
There is no guaranteed character limit. Many descriptions fall between approximately 140 and 160 characters, but pixel width, device type and the individual search query can affect the displayed result. Write for clarity first and use the preview to identify possible truncation.
Does Google always use the submitted meta description?
No. Google may use your submitted description, rewrite part of it or generate a different snippet from visible page content. This commonly happens when another passage answers the search query more directly.
Why does pixel width matter more than character count?
Characters do not occupy equal amounts of space. Letters such as W and M are wider than letters such as i and l. Two titles with the same number of characters can therefore have very different displayed widths.
Should every page have a unique meta description?
Important indexable pages should normally have descriptions written around their individual purpose and search intent. Reusing the same description across many pages makes it harder to communicate why each result is relevant.
Can changing a meta description improve rankings?
A meta description is primarily used to describe and encourage clicks from the search result. Updating it does not guarantee a ranking increase, but a clearer and more relevant description can improve how the result communicates with potential visitors.
What should I include in a meta description?
Explain what the page provides, include the main topic naturally and give the searcher a reason to visit. Avoid vague promises, unnecessary repetition and descriptions that do not match the visible page content.
